Playfully build skills with HABA building blocks
When children use building blocks, initially to build simple towers and then later impressive structures, they display patience and perseverance. They become deeply concentrated and enthusiastic when creating their own play worlds. Learn about the different building blocks from HABA, which ones are suitable for which age group, why playing with building blocks is so valuable for children, and what our industrious young stackers learn in the process!
Why is it a good thing for children to play with wooden building blocks?
Build and understand
HABA building blocks playfully support the development of little stackers. They accompany your child from their first explorations as a baby, all the way to the creation of complex play worlds. If they are given plenty of space on the ground, children will work in all directions, over days, on their “building site”. This trains their hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and concentration, as well as their perseverance and planning skills. During free play they start building in three dimensions. In their exploration of the length, height and width of the space, skillful stackers learn about structure, simple laws of physics, the relationship between cause and effect, the principles of balance and transfer, the domino effect and inertia. This allows children to naturally and independently develop problem-solving skills.
Playing and learning
HABA building blocks can be incorporated into various role plays. Imitation of everyday situations lets children gain self-confidence, as it increases familiarization with situations, and their sense of security. Slipping into other roles also helps them train sequences and verbal negotiation, as well as processing emotions and social interactions. In addition to this, they can take a critical look at certain behavior patterns, and make up their own rules. In this way, the building blocks encourage motor skills, cognitive and language skills development in children, and awaken their creativity.
Which building blocks for children are available from HABA?
HABA offers all stackers in Germany natural or colored wooden building blocks in all sorts of different sizes and shapes, such as cubes, rectangles, prisms and round columns. A cube with a 4 cm edge length is the uniform basic size for the building blocks. This means that they are very easy to use together, and can be combined countless ways to make new, impressive constructions with beautiful details. Some of the building blocks have particularly unusual shapes, colors or effects – they jungle, rattle or clatter. Others represent figures; the children can use them to build their own individual themed play worlds. Figures, other games or natural materials can also be integrated. The building blocks can be used with explorer cars and trains, as well as with stacking, arranging or pegging games. They are versatile toys that awaken a child’s creativity.
Which building blocks are suitable for which age group?
HABA offers the right building block for every age group:
From around 12 months, babies explore building blocks with all their senses. The building blocks for babies can be shaken, hit against each other and placed on top of each other. Simple shapes are perfect for these early explorations, as they are especially easy to grasp. The discovery, explorer and fantasy building blocks engage all the senses with their many different visual and acoustic effects. In the form of toys such as explorer cars and trains, building blocks engage the childhood desire for exploration, and playfully encourage fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
From around 2 years, toddlers create piles and rows with their building blocks, and use both hands to stack them. In addition to this, they also examine all the details on the building blocks. Building blocks that children can combine in various ways to make new, cute and funny figures provide hours of playing fun. Stacking, arrangement and pegging games using building blocks also offer fun challenges for children.
At around 3 years, children start building houses and fantasy structures – initially in simple blocks and then later with gaps and bridges. Stacking and building quickly turns the initial wobbly towers into stable constructions. Colorful building blocks in various shapes encourage the imagination. These building blocks support the copying and construction of things they see adults do. In free play, children display their ingenuity, and can build whatever they want, however they want. Building blocks are also incorporated into simple role playing.
3 to 7 years
At 3 to 7 years, free and three-dimensional building steps up a notch. Children enjoy designing their own space, and have a concept of the three dimensions. Constant replication and testing lets them playfully learn about structural laws, mathematical correlations and simple physics. This lets children learn about their world through the building blocks. Depending on their age and creativity, the building block systems create play backdrops for exciting role playing.
7 - 10 years
From 7 to 10 years, children construct complex structures, vehicles and machines. When building and experimenting with their first constructions, children playfully learn the basic laws of physics. At this age, building blocks are perfect for integrating into educational games: mathematics is very easily illustrated, and physical connections can be explored in exciting construction experiments – even homework can be a lot of fun!
Playing with building blocks is engaging for children of all ages, and not only that - parents and grandparents also enjoy building colorful towers and varied constructions with the little ones, as this awakens fond memories of their own childhood.

What is the best way to clean wooden building blocks?
To clean them simply dampen a cloth with warm water, wipe the building blocks off and then leave them out to dry.
What do the HABA quality and safety tests mean for your child’s play?
As with all HABA products, the quality and safety of our wooden toys is very important to us, and is monitored both by our in-house quality assurance and external testing. The mechanical safety tests are particularly important: in template tests we ensure that the elements of a product are large enough that children under three cannot put them into their mouths and swallow them. Soaking tests also ensure that no small parts that could be swallowed are released. And because the building blocks for children need to be able to put up with a lot during play, we at HABA also check their everyday usability in impact and drop tests. In addition to this, TÜV Rheinland LGA Nürnberg tests the building blocks for saliva and perspiration fastness. This is important, as children under the age of three (in particular) discover their environment with all their senses. The HABA wooden building blocks are suitable for putting in the mouth. More detailed information about the quality and safety standards at HABA can be found in quality and safety.
