Fired up for the fire brigade

Geschichte Feuerwehr.jpg
“It’s really warm today,” says Paul. He rolls back and forth in his garden, looking for a shady spot. “They say today will be the hottest day of the year,” notes his friend Cat Kira as she looks at the weather forecast. “What a pity that the parachuting frog isn’t here. We could have cooled off together in his pond,” she meows. “True, but he has an important job to do! He’s working with Dog Douglas at the volunteer fire brigade and helping people who are in trouble!” say the flying mice proudly. “We can have a race in the forest, it’ll be cooler there!” they suggest cheerfully.

Everyone agrees and soon they’re off and racing. The first section is downhill and Paul is well ahead. Later, as they cross the flower meadow on the way to the forest, Cat Kira knows the best shortcut and is the fastest. But in the forest the flying mice are unstoppable. They are as fast as the wind and first to arrive at the agreed upon destination, the big old beech tree. Cat Kira is disappointed to be the last to arrive.

“But I’m the best climber. Just look and I’ll show you!” she calls to her friends before scrambling quickly up the trunk and into the branches. At first her friends are impressed, but then they lose sight of Kira between the many leaves. “Don’t go too far up!” the flying mice warn her. But it’s too late. Paul and his friends discover Kira, huddled nervously on a small branch. “I don’t know how to get back down, please help!” she calls to her friends.

“But how can we help you when we can’t even get up into the big tree?” squeak the agitated and frantic mice. “I know, why don’t we call the parachuting frog? He’s really brave and he will surely  be able to help!” Paul says to calm the cat and the flying mice. It doesn’t take long for the parachuting frog, his colleague Frido Fireman, and Dog Douglas to arrive in the bright red volunteer fire brigade truck. He looks a little different than usual in his protective suit, safety helmet, gloves and protective footwear, but you can easily recognize him by his mischievous smile.

“Don’t worry!” he croaks encouraging and calls up to Kira “Stay where you are, we’ll be right up!” Frido Fireman winks at him and says “We’ve managed much worse!” He skillfully positions the fire truck at the base of the tree and the parachuting frog quickly hops up the ladder. The friends are amazed at how quickly Frido Fireman extends the long ladder. Once he reaches the same height as Kira, the parachuting frog helps her onto the ladder, which then slowly brings the two down to the ground. Frido Fireman carefully wraps her in an emergency blanket, gives her something to drink, and speaks soothingly to her.

The friends sit together relieved and happy. But all of a sudden they see strange things happening. A little bird comes out of the trees twittering loudly, a frightened deer runs toward them, and a hedgehog rolls itself into a ball in the bushes. “Do you smell that strange smell?” asks Paul. “Yes, it smells like smoke!” realizes Frido Fireman. Then they all notice small flames coming out of the branches a few trees further over. “We’ve come just in time,” says the parachuting frog and grabs the fire hose. “Just to be safe I’ll call the fire station for backup!” decides Frido Fireman. Soon after, the friends hear the sirens of the fire brigade approaching. A large fire truck is the first to arrive. Florian Fireman greets his colleagues from the volunteer fire brigade and gets an overview of the situation. At his command the brave firemen circle around the flames, hit them with strong jets of water on all sides and are quickly able to put the fire out.

“Phew! We’re lucky that the fire didn’t spread to a bigger patch of forest. There’s a high fire danger at the moment with this heat wave,” says Frido Fireman to Florian Fireman. “You’re right, and we got the fire under control together!” “Hooray, the brave fire fighters did a great job!” cheer the flying mice. “And your equipment is really cool!” calls out Pail as he rolls enthusiastically back and forth.

“If you're interested you can come to the fire station with us and have a look around. And then we’d like to invite you to a drink of hot chocolate for your efforts!” suggests Florian Fireman. “Oh yes, we’ve always wanted to ride in a real fire truck!” say the friends in chorus. There’s space for everyone in the fire truck and a few minutes later they arrive safely at the fire station.

“Our garage has space for two fire trucks,” explains Florian Fireman. The friends are impressed with the trucks and all their equipment. Paul wants to know everything about everything, and rolls into every corner he can. “What’s up here on the roof?” asks Cat Kira. “This is our helipad. This is where Helicopter Pilot Hannes heads off on his missions, and then lands again, like he’s just about to!” he says pointing to a little spot in the sky that comes closer and closer, with a loud humming noise, and then lands skillfully on the helipad right in front of the friends. “Helicopters are loud!” whisper the flying mice. “Yes, but also very important on missions when we need to act quickly to rescue people!” emphasizes Helicopter Pilot Hannes as he gets out.

Before they head off, all the friends are allowed to try on a fireman’s helmet, and immediately feel much braver! Then it’s time for the hot chocolate they were promised, and they sit listening to the exciting stories and missions that the fire brigade professionals share with them. Nevertheless, they’re all glad that the fire bell doesn’t ring again – they’ve had enough adventure for one day!
