You need:

  • Red and white handicraft felt
  • Checkered fabric remnants
  • Craft glue (should be suitable for fabric) or fabric glue
  • Red and white thread
  • Red and checkered fabric ribbon
  • Cotton batting
  • Pins, sewing needles, or sewing machine
  • Craft scissors (for cutting threads and ribbons), craft pad, marker, ruler, clothes or craft pins
  • For decorating: fabric paint in gold and silver (only necessary if you want to decorate the boots)

For parents:

  • fabric shears

Note for parents:

This craft idea is suitable for all children and can be made easily with some help. Idea 1 is suitable for younger children, since the felt boots are glued together. The fabric boots are sewn together either with a sewing machine or by hand (idea 2). Help your children when cutting out the boots. You should use fabric shears because only shears can cut clean edges.  But they are often somewhat cumbersome. We therefore recommend that you cut out the boots and the boot cuff for your children.

Idea 1: Making a felt boot (for younger children)

Place the pattern for the boot on the red felt. The pattern for the cuff goes on the white felt. Ask your parents to cut out both twice each. Then you can prepare the ribbon for the loop: cut off 10 to 20 cm, depending on how long the loop should be. In the photos, the finished loop is about 10 cm long.

First glue both red boot parts together. This way, the felt boot becomes more stable and looks better.
Then apply glue to the upper edge of the boot – only on the area of the cuff. Then place the end of the ribbon on the glue on the back edge of the boot. Afterwards, press the white cuff on the boot.

Turn the felt boot over and again apply glue to the upper edge of the boot. Glue also goes on the protruding edges of the cuff. Then place the second end of the ribbon on the glue on the back edge of the boot. Afterwards, press the white cuff onto the boot.

Fasten the edges of the felt boot with clothespins (or straight pins) to dry.

Idea 2: Making fabric boots (for older children)

For this craft idea, all kinds of checkered fabric remnants or even old clothing items are suitable. A fantastic fabric boot can be made from an old shirt, pair of pajamas, or a skirt.

Place the pattern for the boot on the fabric. You need a 1 cm seam allowance, since the fabric boots should be turned after sewing. For this, you have to mark 1 cm all around the boot and cut along the marking. The pattern for the cuff goes on the white felt. Then ask your parents to cut out each piece twice. Then you can prepare the ribbon for the loop: cut off 10 to 20 cm, depending on how long the loop should be. In the photos, the finished loop is about 10 cm long.

Both boot parts are now sewn together 1 cm from the edge. If the fabric has a right side (the pattern can be easily seen here), place this side on the inside. It will therefore be sewn on the left side. You may sew either with the sewing machine or with small stitches by hand. A boot this size takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how quickly you can sew.

Turn the finished boot over and stuff it with some cotton batting. Then place the white sections for the cuffs right and left on the upper edge and pin them with straight pins.  Then place both ends of the ribbon into the cuff and fasten it with its own straight pin.

The cuff is sewn tightly close to the edge. Make sure that the loop is well sewn on.
And the boot is finished … and can be attached to a gift.

If you would like, you can decorate the boot with fabric paint: snow crystals, stars, or dots look beautiful.
